Only 10% of 8th Grade Black Male Students in U.S. Reading Proficiently
Written by Afterparty South on 8 January 2016
A new troubling report highlights the fact that only around 10% of black boys in this country read at or above their reading level proficiently. In the biggest cities around the country (Detroit, Philadelphia, Dallas, Chicago, New York City, etc.), 8th grade black male students’ ability to read proficiently ran anywhere from 3% to 9%. While these numbers are appalling, the worst part is that nobody is doing enough to bring up the numbers.
What’s the easiest and most effective way to raise child reading proficiency? Read to them every day, let them read out loud, make reading fun. The key word is “read.” A few minutes a day can make a world of difference since literacy is one of the biggest indicators of future success.
Gather your kids, neighbor kids, family members, any kids and instill a love of reading. A future generation will thank you for your efforts!
