Should “Empire” Address Real-Life Issues or Just Stick to Entertainment?
Written by Afterparty South on 5 October 2016
Another #Empire Wednesday is upon us, and as the season is heating up, the series is taking a decidedly different and more outspoken tune in light of all the racial turmoil in the country. With so many high-profile officer-involved shootings, the hit show couldn’t simply gloss over the subject. Instead, the series is incorporating the real-life themes into the plots, such as songs alluding to Black Lives Matter and the naming of various victims. In last week’s episode, brother Andre was himself a victim of racial profiling and police brutality, which is sure to lead to some poignant moments in the upcoming season. What do you think of “Empire” touching on hot-button topics? Should they just deal with entertainment? Is it a way to blend reality and fiction?
