Written by Afterparty South on 4 August 2017
Happy birthday to a president who stole our hearts and changed the face of the presidency forever. Former President Obama turns 56 today and we wish him a happy birthday. We also should take a little time to shout out the monumental accomplishments that occurred over his presidency. Here are just a bit of the long list of notable history he made as the first black president in the White House:
- Appointed two women to the Supreme Court, one of which was the first Hispanic
- Nominated the first black Attorney General in U.S. history
- Expanded LGBT rights, including repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
- Expanded federal hate crime laws
- Supported Defense of Marriage Act
- Created White House Council on Women and Girls
- Signed $787 Economic Stimulus Package
- Pulled the country out of the Great Recession and reduced the unemployment rate to record lows
- Proposed new regulations to combat greenhouse gas emissions and curb global warming
- Signed Affordable Care Act which gave insurance to millions, many for the first time
- Reduced unfair drug sentencing guidelines
- And most importantly was cool, poised, professional and presidential every step of the way
Once again, happy birthday to the people’s president!
