Part 1 — How Music Saved One Man: The Story of John D.
Written by Afterparty South on 27 January 2015
Homelessness. Drug Addiction. Mental Illness. Cancer Stricken. College Graduate. Gifted Music Producer. While it may sound like something ripped right out of a Hollywood movie script, this is the true story of one man’s journey from the depths of his own personal hell to the salvation that hard work, determination and ultimately music saved him from.
John Daniel’s journey started with an acoustic guitar which he instantly fell in love with. He would find himself alone with his guitar hours upon hours, writing his own music instead of simply learning to play other people’s music.
He explains it as, “When the music came out of the guitar, in the air, I felt less alone and like something understood me even better than I did.”
At the age of 13, John began using drugs which were a sort of plug for the void he felt within himself. Not feeling comfortable in his own skin, he felt as if he needed to get away from his own mind and fill the hole he felt in his heart.
Consequently, because of his addiction, he found himself homeless living in the closet of a Texas drug house where despite his circumstances, he continued to write music and hone his skills. Eventually he was taken in by residents of the projects where John was able to achieve sobriety in his late teens.
Never one to give up, John ultimately ended up at Southern Methodist University and began to thrive. However, his life would soon take another unexpected turn.
