#TellUsHowYouReallyFeel … Should Girls Who Lie About Their Age Be Charged With A Sex Crime?

Written by on 10 May 2013

Adults facing legal repercussions as a result of teens lying about their age is a major problem in our society. There have been a number of recent high profile cases that confused the true labels of victim and predator. Remember back when Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault for having sex with a 20 year old woman in a bar?  Roethlisberger was not charged with rape (I’m not here to debate his guilt), and many demanded that he be charged with another crime because the woman was not of legal age to drink.  Roethlisberger had been buying her drinks all night. I found it curious that so many people would blame Roethlisberger for the woman being underage when she is the one who lied about her age to get into the bar, and the bar let her in.  How exactly is that Ben’s fault?  Doesn’t he have a reasonable expectation that a woman in a bar is of legal age?  Wouldn’t the young woman really be the criminal here?

Then let’s not forget about former Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor.  He plead guilty to having sex with a minor, and will become a registered sex offender.  Taylor claims he was told by the girl that she was 19, and I believe him after following the case. Taylor plead guilty to avoid prison, but shouldn’t the girl face some punishment as well?  If Taylor is telling the truth, he’s the victim.  Maybe she should be the registered sex offender.

In 2008, a man was sentenced to prison for having sex with a 13 year old girl.  Before you express your disgust, there’s some things you need to know about the case.

First – this girl portrayed herself as 18, and she looks the part.  During the trial her online profile portrayed her as a 19 year old divorced woman.

But wait!  There’s more!

Second – when this man found out she may not be 18 he immediately went to her father for the truth.  He never saw her again.  Clearly he showed sound character by his actions.

Third – this was the SECOND guy to go to prison for being misled by this girl.  Previously, another man was sentenced to 5 years for sleeping with her.  She is a perpetual sexual predator, but it is the men who face legal trouble because we can’t possibly hold a young girl responsible for her actions.

Clearly it’s possible to look a different age than you really are.

I question a legal system where the person who has done no wrong is treated as the predator.  While the person who deliberately set out to mislead, and lie, is the victim.

#TELLUSHOWYOUREALLYFEEL .. Do we really expect men OR women to have to card every potential suitor they come in contact with? IF the person who is underage being deceitful, should they be charged with a crime?  If a girl lies about her age, it is she who is committing the crime, not the man being lied to.
