Are You Financially Responsible For Your Parents?

Oohh wee, word has it that in a few days, Ms. Hattie Crawford Fishburne, 80, is about to be evicted from her L.A. apartment. Of course, it’s sad for anyone to be evicted and practically thrown out on the street and even more so when it involves an elderly person. But what makes this even more news-worthy is that her son is the one and only Laurence Fishburne. Mama Fishburne’s rent is $1,500-month and Son Laurence is worth at least $20 million. Seems to be a no-brainer, right? He calls up mama, let her know, “I got you,” and pays her rent. If only things were that simple. Mama Fishburne said she hasn’t been able to reach her son by phone and claims that “he’s gone Hollywood.” In fact, she said she hasn’t talked to him in a year and that was when his father died.
Mama Fishburne claims to have been the one who single-handedly funded her son’s illustrious career. As a single mother, she worked hard and scrimped and saved to get the award-winning actor where he is today. But now that Mama needs him, Son seems to be nowhere to be found.
And what does Laurence have to say about this? Apparently nothing because his reps said “no comment.” Well, okay.
Surely, there has to be something more to this story. Could Laurence be so heartless that he wouldn’t step in to save his mother from homelessness? Is his mother exaggerating? Is Laurence that bad of a son? Is Mama Fishburne that bad of a mother? Do they have a long history of animosity?
No matter what the case may be, even if you’re estranged from your mother, don’t you at least owe it to your mother to keep her in her home? What could your mother do to you to make you turn your back on her completely?
