My Anaconda Don’t Want None (and Neither Do My Ears) **Video**

Written by on 20 August 2014

If sex sells, then Nicki Minaj has sold out the store and emptied all the shelves. Her latest video “Anaconda” is full of bountiful derrieres, booty shaking galore and an overall ode to the rear. While it may be a visual wonderland to many, a large majority of us can agree that the song is “ummm” at the best.

The lyrics are —  let’s just say, lackluster at best. After “my anaconda don’t want none” is repeated several times, the song basically goes into a one-note tune on how different guys buy Nicki  things because of her butt and how she uses her sexuality to get what she wants. While this is a common theme found in songs, this time it seems quite simplistic and very one-dimensional. The track seems to be yet another trite example of how female artists are usually over sexualized and oftentimes objectified. Nicki, for example, is known far more for her inflated butt than her actual lyrics.

By 2014, shouldn’t we be at a point where a female rapper is judged more by her lyrics than her body? Does it really matter what a female MC looks like? Would you prefer a slightly less attractive female rapper with fire lyrics rather than one who’s more attractive with mediocre lyrics?
