Viola Davis Not Here for Meryl Streep Comparisons Without Getting Same Money
If you’re going to compare the great Viola Davis to the gold standard actress Meryl Streep, you better be prepared to pay her the same amount of coins, honey. In a raw, brutally honest interview at Women of the World in Los Angeles, the revered Academy Award-winning actress refused to back down and stated, “I have a career that’s probably comparable to Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver. They all came out of Yale, they came out of Juilliard, they came out of NYU. They had the same path as me, and yet I am nowhere near them. Not as far as money, not as far as job opportunities, nowhere close to it.”
She further expounded by saying, “People say, ‘You’re a black Meryl Streep…We love you. There is no one like you. OK, then if there’s no one like me, you think I’m that you pay me what I’m worth.”
Miss Viola didn’t come to play or mince words during the wide-ranging interview that electrified the audience at Neuehouse Hollywood. The event brought together some of the most powerful and influential women, including Olivia Munn, Kara Swisher, Joy Ann Reid and more as they touched on racism, sexism, the political climate and much more. Renowned journalist Tina Brown hosted the even to highlight the #MeToo movement, #TimesUp, sex trafficking and more.
