Steve Harvey Just Can’t Say No to a Good Dragging

We’ve seen it play out time and time again. A black male celebrity gets to a certain age, stature and wealth status and all of a sudden, he gets a little more conservative, kumbaya-ish, wanting to tell black people how we should respond and feel to different situations, etc. Case in point, Steve Harvey. He had his face time when he met with Donald Trump at Trump Tower because he “had to.” Now, he’s inserted himself in the middle of the Snoop-Donald Trump beef by saying that, “The problem with all this is that there is an office in this country called the ‘president,’ and you have to respect the office. You really do. Whether you want to or not. You have to respect the office. They got laws.”
Well, Mr. Harvey, there’s a thing called freedom of speech and “they got laws” about that, too. It’s hard to respect a man who has shown virtually every group of the county (except rich white men) little to no respect. It’s hard to respect a man who lies, cheats and colludes with foreign enemies to get into office. It’s hard to respect a man who at this very moment is passing health care legislation that’s going to unduly harm the poor, women, children and overall, black and brown folks.
While nobody is condoning violence, Snoop used a clown as a symbol for a so-called president that many of us can’t respect and a fake gun in his video. Nobody with any common sense would take that as a serious threat. He has the freedom of speech to protect his ideas. Just like we should have the freedom to not listen to a big mouth, gassed up quasi comedian who somehow is the black folks’ leader.
