Fascination with Celebrity Couples: Unhealthy Obsession or Fun Reprieve?
Written by Tamara M. on 2 November 2017
From the glossy cover of magazines to celebrity-themed tabloid shows to the endless posts, shares, and retweets, the country has a fixation on celebrity couples. The question is: Is it healthy? In the past few weeks, we’ve seen the extravagant, over-the-top wedding of Gucci Mane that was televised for the world to see. Before we could catch our breath, Offset and Cardi B announced their engagement and reportedly the million dollar deals to get first dibs on their nuptials are already rolling in.
While it’s fun to see the glitz and glamour of celebrity couples and their seemingly unattainable lifestyles, are we too obsessed? When Cardi B and Offset “broke up,” Instagram went crazy with perfect strangers weighing in. Of course, this is great for celebrities to increase their visibility, but there is something to be said about keeping a relationship personal. And, how about people who set “relationship goals” based on the superficial aspects they see playing out among couples on social media? It seems they are setting themselves up for failure.
Then, there are people who just enjoy the romance and good feelings that come with any relationship, whether theirs or someone else’s. It is a hard world full of bad news, so maybe it’s just a fun reprieve to enter a sort of fantasy world. Maybe these people understand that it’s someone else’s relationship, but it’s still fun to be an observer.
You weigh in: Is our fascination with celebrity relationships an obsession or harmless fun?
