#TellUsHowYouReallyFeel.. Can Americans Survive On Minimum Wage?
Written by MadamOfMedia on 14 June 2013
Did you know President Barack Obama has proposed increasing the federal minimum wage, raising it from $7.25 to $9 an hour? He also wants to tie future increases to inflation, so it adjusts automatically with the cost of living. The proposal would gradually increase federally required hourly wages to reach $9 by the end of 2015, and would increase earnings of an estimated 15 million low-income workers.
Even with the tax relief we’ve put in place, a family with two kids that earns the minimum wage still lives below the poverty line. That’s wrong … Let’s declare that in the wealthiest nation on earth, no one who works full time should have to live in poverty.
Business groups often oppose minimum wage increases because they say it increases operating costs, and can lead to layoffs. It can also lead to a reduction in hiring, because each employee is now more expensive. What are your thoughts? Do you think the average person can live a productive life on minimum wage? While you ponder, check out SPENT which was created to paint a picture of life at the bottom of the wage scale. To play, visit the SPENT website at http://www.playspent.org
The game starts with the premise that you lost your job, burned through your savings and lost your house. Now you are starting from scratch (well, you still have a car) with the choice of three jobs: waiting tables, warehouse, or administrative temp. The object of the game is to see if you can make it through the month without going broke. If you run out of cash, you have three one-time options of stealing from your kid’s piggy bank, donating plasma, or getting a payday loan. Good luck!
