Can a Porn Addiction Ruin a Relationship?

Written by on 4 March 2016

According to actor/comedian, Terry Crews, a porn addiction nearly ruined his long-standing marriage. “How could that be? It’s just porn,” some might wonder. A porn addiction is just as real and dangerous as an addiction to drugs, alcohol or gambling. Some addicts will find themselves viewing pornography for the majority of the day, neglecting family, work, school, social and/or religious obligations. All the time viewing takes away from the time that he or she is spending with loved ones, especially an intimate partner.

While viewing porn can be harmless for most people, for others, it can trigger dangerous and negative attitudes and behaviors. It can cause the addict to view people only as objects, view them as available only for their pleasure. It can cause them to undertake in risky and dangerous behaviors such as soliciting prostitutes, having sex with multiple partners (often unprotected) or increasingly associating violence with sex. It’s not hard to connect the incidence of these behaviors with a failing relationship, where the partner feels as if he or she is no longer valued.

The most important thing if you see this type of behavior in yourself or your partner is to talk about it openly and admit that there’s a problem. There’s a number of treatment options available to help a person through this addiction. Remember – pornography is no longer harmless when it’s affecting real lives and real relationships.
