Billboard Music, You Have Some Explaining to Do: Iggy Azalea, Top Rap Artist?

Written by on 18 May 2015

The Billboard Music Awards, held Sunday night, featured its usual “Top Rap Artist” category. Of course, there were the usual names like Drake, J. Cole and Nicki Minaj. Maybe a little bit more iffy was Rae Sremmurd. But downright baffling seemed to be including Iggy Azalea in this group. But lo and behold, Iggy won.

Won top rap artist? Yes, she did that. In addition, she had two songs in the “Top Rap Song” category, including “Black Widow” and “Fancy,” for which the latter won the category.

Based on all of the rap artists and songs out, do you think Iggy Azalea is representative of rap? Or is she simply the mainstream choice? Is she getting a pass for being a novelty – a white female rapper? Are award shows even relevant anymore?
