Golden Globes Picture of Diversity: Was it a Backlash to 2016 Oscars?

While #OscarsSoWhite trended in 2016 with ferocity and backlash, the 2017 Golden Globes was a picture of diversity with the black arts shining brightly in the spotlight instead of fading in the background. Since the Golden Globes are a good predictor of Oscar winners, maybe this year’s Oscars will look a lot less whitewashed and a little more colorful. But last night, black actors and actresses picked up some of the biggest awards. Here’s a look at some of the winners:

  • Best Motion Picture – “Moonlight”
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture – Viola Davis in “Fences”
  • Best Performer by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy – Donald Glover in “Atlanta”
  • Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy – “Atlanta”
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy – Tracee Ellis Ross in “Black-ish”
